About the Role:
Kong is an Open-Core project built on an open-source API Gateway, with an enhanced Enterprise version. Your primary responsibility will be to develop, maintain, and enhance the Kong Gateway in both its open-source and enterprise editions. You will engage with the open-source community and collaborate with various teams within the company.
This is a remote position available for candidates residing in Europe, including Ireland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, France, or the United Kingdom.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the Product Management team to identify and implement improvements.
- Develop and test prototypes for networking software using Rust.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to design and implement new features.
- Fix bugs, optimize performance, and implement low-level system enhancements.
- Engage with the open-source community and contribute to ongoing projects.
- Provide support to technical teams and manage escalations.
- Mentor and guide junior team members.
- Perform additional tasks as required by the manager.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Comfortable working in a remote, distributed team with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaboration and documentation.
- Strong expertise in Linux systems troubleshooting and performance analysis.
- Experience in programming low-level networking systems (preferably Nginx/OpenResty, but Apache is also acceptable).
- Knowledge of IdP/AuthZ systems, monitoring and profiling tools, and network traffic inspection.
- Preferred: At least 2 years of experience with Rust.
- Experience designing, developing, and debugging scalable, distributed, and resilient applications.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Lua (preferred), Perl, Python, or Ruby.
- Hands-on experience developing and supporting large-scale SaaS platforms.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a team to develop and deploy server-side applications.
Bonus Points:
- Experience with NGINX/OpenResty/Kong/LuaJIT.
- Knowledge of Envoy or Istio.
- Familiarity with VM technologies like eBPF and WASM.
