About the Role
Kong is an Open-Core project. It is built on the open-source API Gateway, with an Enterprise Gateway built on top of it to extend and enhance it. The Enterprise Gateway is the central piece of the Kong ecosystem, which also includes other software and infrastructure components that add even more value.
In this role, your main responsibility will be to develop, maintain, and extend the Kong Gateway, both in its open-source and enterprise versions. You will interact with the open-source community and collaborate with other teams within the company to improve it. You will be responsible for building foundations for other teams and customers, discovering and producing cutting-edge industry trends and use cases.
This position is fully remote for candidates in Europe, and Kong is currently hiring in countries like Ireland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, France, or the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Product management team to identify and implement enhancements.
- Propose and implement POCs and prototypes for networking software in Rust.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to architecture, design, and understand upcoming new features.
- Bug fixing, performance tuning, and low-level optimizations.
- Engage with the open-source community.
- Provide help to the support and escalation teams.
- Mentoring and pairing with other team members.
- Any additional tasks required by the manager.
Qualifications
- Comfortable working in a remote distributed team with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both for working with others and writing documentation.
- Strong hands-on expertise for Linux systems troubleshooting and profiling.
- Experience programming low-level networking systems: Nginx and/or Openresty are preferred, but other systems like Apache are also valid.
- Experience in any of the following: IdP/AuthZ systems, monitoring and profiling systems, network traffic inspection.
- Optional but highly sought after: At least 2 years of experience working with Rust.
- Experience designing, prototyping, building, and debugging applications that are highly scalable, distributed, reliable, and resilient.
- Familiarity with a scripting language. Lua would be ideal, but Perl, Python, or Ruby are also acceptable.
- Experience developing and supporting a large-scale SaaS platform.
- At least 5 years of experience working in a team to develop, package, and deliver server-side applications and components.
Bonus Points
- Experience with NGINX/OpenResty/Kong/LuaJIT.
- Experience with Envoy or Istio.
- Understanding of VM implementations like eBPF and/or WASM.

About The Role
You will be working at a dynamic, fast-paced, and sometimes hectic startup as the Regional Director of Kong's Customer Experience Professional Services team. The team has the core responsibility of engaging with our customers across the post-sales lifecycle, ensuring they receive the utmost value from their investment in Kong technology.
As the leader of this team, you will ensure the successful day-to-day operations of our Field Engineers and Solution Architects in the EMEA region.
The world-class support & technical consulting services this team provides are essential in driving customer satisfaction, retention, & future expansion. Our Field Engineers guide customers through the implementation and delivery of Kong technology, while our Solution Architects serve as long-term trusted advisors, outlining an overall API strategy and driving continued education, adoption, and use of Kong solutions.
In this role, you will provide strategic direction and mentorship while owning direct reporting and P&L responsibility. Additionally, you will serve as a trusted partner and sponsor for our largest and most critical customers, interfacing with everyone from Developers to Executives while representing Kong culture and values every day.
This is one of the most challenging roles in the industry, and we are trying to do things differently. Your existing playbook and experience will be useful, but expect the need to innovate and be creative in how we address everything from titles to billable project structure.
Above all, you’ll act as a stellar leader and mentor for the rest of Kong.
What you'll be doing:
- Accountability for services utilization and revenue targets while holding yourself and Kong to a high standard of customer experience.
