Company Information:
The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an experienced Staff Security Software Engineer to join the Product Security team and help build new security technologies to protect Wikipedia and other projects. This role is highly hands-on and involves working with security experts to design and code new features that will protect users and ensure the platform remains resilient against cyber threats.
About the Role:
You will be working primarily on the MediaWiki platform, the engine behind Wikipedia, with the goal of meeting stringent performance standards while addressing security challenges. Your key responsibilities will involve designing, building, and deploying security capabilities, mentoring and leading a security development team, reviewing and deploying security features developed by the Foundation and community members, and collaborating with development teams to ensure safe architectural and implementation choices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Build Security Features: Design and implement security capabilities for MediaWiki to safeguard the platform from emerging threats.
- Mentorship and Leadership: Lead and mentor a security development team, sharing expertise and guiding them in building secure software.
- Security Maintenance: Address technical debt in security-critical components and handle ongoing security maintenance.
- Collaboration: Work closely with development teams to ensure that security measures are built into architecture and implementation.
- Support Operations: Assist with application security incidents and operations, ensuring the platform remains secure at all times.
Skills and Experience:
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on security.
- Strong ability to work effectively in PHP (object-oriented code) and with client-side JavaScript.
- Experience in developing secure software and security features.
- Familiarity with working in a Linux environment, particularly with web application development and deployment.
- Experience in mentoring and leadership within development teams.
- Strong understanding of web application security, and ability to communicate security issues to non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with common security challenges in large, international projects and open-source communities.
- Experience with anti-abuse mechanisms such as CAPTCHA and bot detection is a plus.
- Previous experience working with security countermeasures against web, backend, and database-level attacks is highly desirable.
- Ability to work remotely and maintain focus.
Additional Qualifications:
- Knowledge of threat modeling and secure design patterns.
- Experience finding and fixing security bugs and reviewing code for potential security gaps.
- Interest in expanding security skills related to exploiting and mitigating application-level vulnerabilities.

المهارات والخبرة:
- أكثر من 8 سنوات من الخبرة في هندسة البرمجيات مع التركيز على الأمان.
- قدرة قوية على العمل بشكل فعال في PHP (البرمجة الكائنية) ومع JavaScript من جانب العميل.
- خبرة في تطوير البرمجيات الآمنة وميزات الأمان.
- إلمام بالعمل في بيئة لينوكس، وخاصة في تطوير وتوزيع التطبيقات الويب.
- خبرة في التوجيه والقيادة ضمن فرق التطوير.
- فهم قوي لـ أمان تطبيقات الويب، والقدرة على شرح قضايا الأمان للجماهير غير التقنية.
- إلمام بالتحديات الأمنية الشائعة في المشاريع الكبيرة والدولية والمجتمعات مفتوحة المصدر.
- خبرة مع آليات مكافحة إساءة الاستخدام مثل CAPTCHA واكتشاف الروبوتات هي ميزة إضافية.
- خبرة سابقة في العمل مع تدابير الأمان ضد الهجمات على مستوى الويب، الخلفية، وقواعد البيانات أمر مرغوب فيه.
- القدرة على العمل عن بُعد مع الحفاظ على التركيز.
المؤهلات الإضافية:
- معرفة بـ نموذج التهديدات و أنماط التصميم الآمن.
- خبرة في العثور على أخطاء الأمان وإصلاحها ومراجعة التعليمات البرمجية للثغرات الأمنية المحتملة.
