About the Role
As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, you will lead a distributed team of engineers working on Ubuntu's core systems, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage management. This is a high-impact role that combines technical leadership with the opportunity to influence strategy, culture, and delivery within a globally distributed engineering environment.
You will drive the development of new features, oversee product roadmaps, and ensure the technical success of Ubuntu. Additionally, you’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and engage with the open-source community to further advance Ubuntu’s platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a distributed engineering team, ensuring effective collaboration and performance.
- Demonstrate strong engineering principles and actively lead by example.
- Oversee the planning, estimation, and execution of team projects.
- Work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu's core systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams to ensure alignment on architecture and roadmaps.

- Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
- Proven experience in managing or leading software engineering teams.
- High-quality software engineering knowledge in areas like Linux system architecture, boot process, and various toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go).
- Engagement with open-source communities and processes.
- Strong technical leadership skills and the ability to mentor and inspire a distributed team.
