Result of Service :Upon completion, the assignment will contribute to designing innovative solutions to support sustainable urbanization in Bahrain and UAE. 

It will also create a precedent for tech-driven and data informed decision making to lead to more sustainable and inclusive cities in Bahrain and UAE.

Work Location :Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain)

Expected duration :6 months

Duties and Responsibilities :Organizational Setting: UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. Background: The UN-Habitat Country Programme in Bahrain is supporting the efforts of the Government in achieving sustainable urbanization and harnessing on the power of cities as places of opportunities, inclusion and wellbeing for all. UN-Habitat’s portfolio in Bahrain is increasingly connected to the climate agenda and focused on urban sustainability. With Bahrain’s most recent commitments to the climate goals and specially to reach net zero by 2060, key strategies are anchored in the implementation of the National Afforestation Plan (2022-2035) and its goal to increase the tree count from 1.8 million trees to 3.6 million by 2035, as well as quadruple the mangrove area. UN-Habitat is supporting these efforts in several ways, including through building capacities, developing tools for the design of the urban environment as well as raising awareness. The overall goal of our work is to support the transition towards more sustainable and climate-adapted urban systems, and to improve environmental quality by increasing the quality and use of green public spaces with direct effects on the health and wellbeing of the residents in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In implementing its projects, UN-Habitat and its experts work with key Government institutions to plan, coordinate, implement, and support various activities related to the national programmes. 

The primary beneficiaries include government authorities and experts, decision-makers, as well as the general public whose awareness is raised and living conditions improved.

 To support its growing portfolio of projects, UN-Habitat Bahrain seeks an urban data and intelligence expert to support project management, programme coordination, data collection and analysis, mapping, design of digital tools for planning and monitoring urban data and intelligence. Reporting Line: The Consultant will work under the supervision of the Head of Country Programme in Bahrain and UAE. He/she will engage in output-based deliverables to support sustainable and data-driven urban development in Bahrain and related work. 

Duties and responsibilities: -

 Lead development of project proposals and support fund raising - Manage implementation of project deliverables and activities - Enhance data management and intelligence to support the country programme - Develop as needed potential applications of AI and machine learning to assist UN-Habitat and its partners in the implementation of projects and design of urban solutions. - Support the development of data related outputs linked to innovation, prototyping. dashboards and applied research methodologies to develop innovative urban data solutions. - Problem solving, with particular focus on generating spatial data evidence-based urban planning and management. - Support in the assessment of data gaps, data collection, cleaning and analysis. - Establish strategic, operational and technical initiatives towards data collection, database modelling, data processing, storage, mapping and sharing. - Support capacity building and knowledge on integrated data-driven urban planning.

Qualifications/special skills :

• University degree in engineering, computer science (and/or related fields), good working knowledge of programming languages, AI, GIS and data processing skills is required. • At least 4 years of relevant work experience in the field of digital transformation, programming, systems development, and data processing is required.

Languages :• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in Arabic is desirable.
